Reflections from Dubai

Welcome to this week’s newsletter from Dubai, where skyscrapers, crows, and unexpected moments of magic and miracles merge together.

Five Lessons from the Heart of Dubai

Life's wisdom often emerges in the most unexpected places—in this case, a warm, hazy afternoon in a city of contrasts. Before we journey through Dubai, let these five lessons guide your exploration:

1. Your Internal Growth Matters True success and internal happiness is about your personal transformation, not just collecting external achievements.

  1. Serve From The Heart Miracles happen through heartfelt service, not by expecting instant rewards from the universe.
  2. Maintain Grace Your real power lies in staying dignified and pure-hearted, regardless of challenging external circumstances.
  3. Adapt and Thrive Like the Dubai skyline, flourish by welcoming change and remaining flexible, sometimes it takes a little time to adjust to new environments.
  4. Find Magic in Small Moments Miracles exist in unexpected places—pay attention to life's more subtle, and beautiful details.

Concrete and Spirit

Dubai is a city that's both breathtaking and bewildering. Skyscrapers rise from the desert, luxury is everywhere. Powerful, heady oud scents float through hotel lobbies —at times it's like walking into a futuristic dream.

But it feels different this time. I find myself missing something... it’s the quiet whispers of nature. The rustling of trees, unpolluted night skies, the raw energy of untouched lands with a heart and soul.

We all thrive in different environments, tuned to our own rhythms and needs. Recognising our connection to nature, humans flourish most when aligned with the natural cycles and rhythms. Perhaps this explains the sense of disconnection many feel in artificial, man-made spaces—places that often feel sterile and removed from our environmental roots.

Even the most resilient flowers and trees need care to survive in harsh desert areas, and we too need intentional care to be able to thrive beyond our natural habitats.

Th streets of Dubai beat with man-made human ambition. Travel helps us to understand that every place in the world carries its own unique energy.

The distant calls of prayer echo as a beautiful reminder that beneath all this steel and concrete, there's still something deeply human, something connected to the greater.

Morning Observations: The Urban Bird Drama

At breakfast, I'm a spectator to the urban birdlife dramas. The local crows hover with patience above the terrace dining tables. While most guests don't notice them, I’m a secret co-conspirator in their food heists. There's something amusing about their persistence.

On this particular morning, a crow makes a move—it's now his third anxious attempt to thieve a half-eaten croissant from a neighbouring table. As he swoops in, snatching his prize, he flies upwards to the highest branch of a nearby palm tree. I sip my coffee and raise an imaginary "high five" to his success, wondering if anyone else sees the poetry in such moments as I do.

The Essence of Dubai

Dubai is neither beautiful nor ugly—it's a man-made living, breathing ecosystem of human ambitions. The malls are luxuriously bougie, the air quality awful, the metro transport at rush hour is an experience of its own, yet it all thrives in its own way.

”The best way to enjoy Dubai is to explore it with an open mind and heart.”

The Burj Khalifa: A Monument of Possibility

No structure can embody Dubai more than the Burj Khalifa, rising up over the skyline like a magical wizard's hat against the beautiful moonlit desert night sky.

Designed by American architect Adrian Smith, the tower is a manifestation of human brilliance. Inspired by the Hymenocallis, or Spider Lily, a delicate desert flower, the structure mirrors the geometry of nature. Standing at a 2,722 feet from base to tip, it's not just the world's tallest building—it's really human poetry written in steel and glass.

“We are living proof that when human beings have the courage and commitment to transform a dream into reality, there is nothing that can stop them. Dubai is a living example of that.”Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Magic or Miracle?

Which brings me to a deeper reflection: Was this magnificent structure created through magic or miracle? The distinction matters more than you might think.

Some people approach life as if God, their higher power, is a cosmic vending machine. They insert their earthly desires and expect to manifest earthly rewards. Believing that a bigger house, a cool car, or a more prestigious job title will somehow unlock their true happiness. But true manifestation is about making the internal transformation first.

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." - 1 Corinthians 13:13

The Cinderella Metaphor

Think of Cinderella as a metaphorical journey of the human spirit. While her stepsisters schemed and envied her, she remained pure of heart. Her miracle wasn't the ball gown, the prince, the carriage, or the glass slipper, but in her ability to maintain grace. Her magical miracle worker fairy godmother only showed up when her heart was full of love, and her need genuine.

The Nature of Miracles

Miracles happen not when we plead for what we think we need from God, but when we ask from the heart. It's your intention, of heart, of purpose. It’s important to remember that’s not always the case, sometimes it can feel like our prayers go unanswered, and that’s because we can‘t control all of life’s outcomes. Maybe, what we need in those times is to learn to trust God in different ways than what we would choose.

A Simple Truth

As the afternoon sunlight softens, and evening shadows fall across Dubai, I'm struck by a truth: Miracles occur when love meets determination.

And sometimes, miracles do look like the persistent crow, a towering skyscraper, or a simple moment of unexpected grace whilst listening to the prayers from the nearby mosque or watching the sunset. It’s simply up to us to notice them.
